We are excited to announce that the Michigan Chapter has been selected to host the 2018 ACBS Annual Meeting and International Boat Show in Port Huron, Michigan! This week-long event will be called “Boat the Blue” with the theme “Bring Your Boats Home” referencing the Caribbean blue waters and rich boat building history along the banks of the St. Clair River and the surrounding areas.
This world class event will attract some of the finest boats from this area and from across the United States and Canada. We will have the opportunity to showcase our beautiful area and places us on the world stage demonstrating to everyone why we love living and boating here. In addition, our local classic cruiser population could make this one of the largest gatherings of cruisers at any International show in recent history. The timing is also ideal as it coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Michigan Chapter!
The festivities will kick-off with pre-events planned and hosted by the Michigan Chapter on Sunday, September 9 through Wednesday, September 12. The ACBS Annual Meeting will be on Thursday, September 13 with the ACBS International Boat Show on Friday and Saturday, September 14 and 15.
Port Huron will shine as a first class host for the boat show and the annual meeting activities. The newly opened Blue Water Convention Center will be the meeting venue and the adjacent DoubleTree by Hilton® Hotel will house guests comfortably and affordably in over 225 rooms. Both facilities have beautiful views of the Blue Water Bridge and St. Clair River. The River Street Marina, within walking distance of downtown restaurants and located on the Black River, will be providing protected docking facilities for over 100 boats. The Black River flows into the St. Clair River which connects Lake Huron to Lake St. Clair – setting the perfect stage for three days of enjoyable boating and pre-events.
The enthusiasm and cooperation from the Blue Water Visitors Bureau, the chamber of commerce, the City of Port Huron, Desmond Marine, St. Clair Community College, EBW TV, The Community Foundation of St. Clair County and other individual volunteers throughout our County has been outstanding. We feel it is also important to thank the County Board and leadership for their vision in building the convention center. Without this facility this event and many like it could never happen. The ACBS Board who approved our site said the Convention Center was a key to the show being approved in Port Huron. During their visit of our area they witnessed firsthand the kind of community support that will make this show a fantastic week-long boating and spectator experience.
This honor for our chapter would not have been possible without the vision and hard work of Show Chairman Jack Warren and his committee, Greg Lewandowski, LeRoy Stevens and Mark Walker. This committee prepared the proposal which was presented by Jack and Mark at the 2015 ACBS annual meeting last September in Minnesota. Details about the venue were confirmed with ACBS over the last few months and final approval was granted in February.
We are just kicking off the “Boat the Blue” Facebook page where you can find all the latest information specifically related to this event. “Like” it to get updates at: https://www.facebook.com/BoatTheBlue/.
Above all, mark your 2018 calendars for September 9 – 15 to participate as both a boater and chapter volunteer. We will show the boaters and spectators how the Michigan Chapter can pull together to welcome and impress them with a fun, well planned and well executed event!
